what does confidence mean to you?
I think confidence radiates from being comfortable and honest with yourself and your decisions. It’s about compassion and self-love. It is the highest form of being at one with your choices.
sammy'S STORY
In short, my father’s alcoholism encouraged an adolescent life of drugs, dishonesty, cheating, stealing, sex and partying. I didn’t care for much, just wanted to have fun. My first son Isaac made me realize how important health, sobriety, cleanliness and innocence is. I feel fortunate to have had the experiences that I did — good and bad — because they majorly contributed to such growth. I am forever thankful.
WHEN IS YOUR FIRST MEMORY OF FEELING CONFIDENT?
Recently! After having kids I developed severe varicose veins on my legs. It’s something that’s hard for me to expose. We were just in New York City and I wore a dress for the first time this summer. I surprised myself because usually the thought of that many people seeing my legs would be enough to make me wear jeans, but honestly no one gives a f*&%! Everyone was so caught up with their own things and the business of the city — we are never really paying that much attention to others. I felt super sexy in the dress. I guess I’ll never know if people were looking at my legs or my outfit, but my husband said I looked hot. That was enough!
When is your first memory of feeling insecure?
I fractured my hip when I was 12 and my legs have been different lengths ever since. I have a limp and I stand weird if I’m not compensating for the imbalance on my dominant leg. It’s still something that trips me up, but I don’t like to complain about looks — I’m healthy and have legs that work. I guess I felt insecure because I “wasn’t normal”.
WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL MOST CONFIDENT NOW?
Doing my hair, putting on “real clothes,” having a fresh face and going somewhere fun with the kids or date night! My kids are my life — I feel so confident being a mother, dressing up just helps me feel ladylike.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU’RE MOST PROUD OF?
Family. Health. Friends.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF?
ACTUALLY listen to mom.
How are you using your platform to make a difference?
I use social media to share my past (in hopes that it will help others), clean living and photos of my kids because kids make everything better.
