PSYCHE SOUTHWELL, creator + editor of Economy of Style

Over the summer, a woman walked into the shop with green leaves on her pants, red lipstick, and a huge smile. I felt somewhat in awe and a little jealous of how well this woman rocked a pair of printed pants and a bold lip simultaneously. Since then, she has become a familiar face in the shop. Psyche is so sweet and personable and we are lucky to have her kick off our Campaign for Confidence 2.0

Psyche's Story

As a social science researcher and educator, I had ambivalent feelings about the unfashionable qualities of the academic profession to which I belonged. So, I started a blog to share my thoughts about style. My content resonated with women around the world.

How would you define confidence?

Confidence is knowing when the visions I have for my life will materialize.

When is your first memory of feeling confident?

I perhaps don’t remember the first moment, but I do have distinct memories of being in an environment where I received affirmations from my mother, grandmother, and other family members. And, just as important, they made me aware of what my strengths were.

"It’s normal for me to experience moments of self-doubt. The trick has been learning how to let those doubts push me forward rather than immobilize me"

What makes you feel most confident now?

Seeing my passion project materialize into a thriving business empowers me daily.

How are you using your platform to make a difference?

I started my platform to talk about the importance of style, a crucial medium for demonstrating how you think. I’ve since, however, broadened the scope of my writings to occasionally advocate for issues that are pertinent to the women I engage daily. For instance, I’ve shared my personal health journey with fibroids, surgery, and racial inequities in the healthcare system.

What is something you’re most proud of?

I started my platform to demonstrate that women can achieve their desired styles on any budget. I’m most proud that so many women have found my content useful.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Don’t limit your dreams based on your current circumstances. I’ve always been interested in fashion but never saw it as a viable career based on my environment.
